What is Spokeo

Spokeo is a people-search and data broker site that compiles publicly available records — property records, court filings, social media, and data purchased from other brokers — into a single searchable profile per person.

A typical listing includes a current and past address, phone numbers, email addresses, relatives, and sometimes social media accounts. Spokeo is a registered data broker in California and other states with data broker registries.

Its own opt-out page says the data it aggregates is publicly available and exempt from state privacy laws, but that it enables opt-outs anyway.

How to remove yourself

These steps follow Spokeo's own opt-out page, checked in October 2026. It costs nothing but time.

    Find your listing and copy its URL

    Search your name on Spokeo, open your profile, and copy the exact URL of that listing page.

    Submit the opt-out form

    Go to spokeo.com/optout, paste the listing URL, enter an email address, and complete the CAPTCHA.

    Confirm by email

    Click the confirmation link Spokeo sends to that email address. Spokeo says the request should be processed within 24-48 hours, depending on the nature of the request and the amount of data.

Each listing has its own unique URL, so if you find more than one profile — from a maiden name, a previous address, or a name variation — you need to repeat the opt-out form for each one individually.

Spokeo also says opting out doesn't remove the data from its original source, so your information may still appear on other websites. For questions about a request, its opt-out page lists [email protected].

If a listing reappears

Spokeo's opt-out page says that because it continually receives new and updated records from public sources, your information may reappear on Spokeo in the future without notice, and it asks you to check regularly for additional listings.

If that happens, repeat the opt-out process on the new listing.

Common questions

Can I legally use Spokeo to screen a job applicant or tenant?

No — Spokeo's own help center states its data can't be used "to make any decisions about employment, housing, or any other purpose covered by the FCRA," because Spokeo says it is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Using a Spokeo profile that way would violate Spokeo's own stated terms, regardless of what the listing shows.

Does opting out of Spokeo remove me from Google search results too?

No. Opting out only removes the listing from Spokeo itself, using the spokeo.com/optout form described above. A Spokeo profile that also appears in Google search results is a separate step from the opt-out process.

Will my information come back after I opt out?

It can. Spokeo's own opt-out page says your information may reappear on Spokeo in the future without notice, because it continually receives new and updated public records, and it asks you to check regularly for additional listings.

Will info about my relatives disappear from my Spokeo listing too?

Not automatically — a typical Spokeo profile lists relatives as part of the compiled record, and opting out clears that specific listing page, relatives info included. But if a relative has their own separate Spokeo profile, that's a different listing with its own URL and needs its own opt-out request to come down from Spokeo's index.

Does Spokeo charge a fee to opt out?

No. Spokeo's own opt-out process at spokeo.com/optout is free. It costs nothing but time: find your listing, copy its URL, submit the form with an email and CAPTCHA, then confirm by email. Spokeo says it typically processes within 24-48 hours.

Do I pay if my listing isn't removed?
