What actually qualifies for removal

TripAdvisor's Content & Community Guidelines list what isn't allowed in a review. Examples include:

  • Fake review or wrong property
  • Explicit, threatening or discriminatory language
  • Promotional content or links
  • Private information, including full names of individuals
  • Plagiarized or AI-generated content
  • Irrelevant content, such as unrelated political commentary

    Find the review in your Management Center

    Log into your TripAdvisor Management Center, select your property, and locate the review under Reviews.

    Click "Report a Review," select the reason that applies, and attach any supporting evidence.

    Wait for TripAdvisor's decision

    You'll receive a decision by email, and TripAdvisor may request more evidence before deciding. It doesn't publish a timeline.

If the request is denied

TripAdvisor doesn't publish an appeal process. If it asks for more evidence, that's the chance to strengthen the case. A review that's genuine but negative, with no guideline violation behind it, usually can't be removed.

No. TripAdvisor removes reviews that break its Content & Community Guidelines, not reviews a business disagrees with. The review needs to fall into a category such as fake content, the wrong property, commercial promotion or explicit content.

What if the reviewer never actually stayed or visited?

Report it as fake or for the wrong property, and include any evidence you have, such as booking records or details that don't match your property. TripAdvisor asks for supporting documentation, not just an assertion.

Do I pay if the review isn't removed?

Our removal services are no-removal, no-fee: you're invoiced only once we achieve the removal defined in your Service Agreement. Search suppression is billed for the work performed.

Can a review be removed if it names a staff member directly?

Sometimes. The guidelines don't allow full names (first name and surname) of other individuals in reviews, with exceptions that include executives, property owners and managers, public professionals such as doctors and lawyers, and employees who use their surname when responding to reviews. If the name falls outside those exceptions, report the review and select the reason that applies.

How long does TripAdvisor take to review a flagged review?

TripAdvisor doesn't publish a timeline for decisions. You'll receive the decision by email, and it may ask for more evidence before deciding. We're not aware of a formal appeal route beyond responding to that request.

Are AI-generated or plagiarized reviews against the rules?

Yes. The guidelines don't permit AI-generated review text or images, and plagiarized or copied content is removed. If you believe a review was fabricated or copied, report it through your Management Center and attach whatever evidence supports that.
