How to Fix What Google AI Overviews Says About You

The AI-generated summary box above Google's regular search results draws its answers from the same indexed web pages that show up below it. Google itself admits it "can and will make mistakes" — here's what changes it.

Quick overview

  • AI Overviews cite only pages already indexed and eligible for a snippet in regular Search, with no separate ranking system for AI.
  • There's no edit or delete button. The fix runs through the cited source pages, plus Google's "Report a problem" feedback and the "Report Content on Google" form, which has an AI-generated content option and a defamation category.
  • AI Overviews regenerate continuously, so a fixed source doesn't guarantee a clean overview later, and Google publishes no response time for either channel.
  • Google itself says "AI Overviews can and will make mistakes."

What are AI Overviews

AI Overviews is the AI-generated answer box Google shows above regular search results for many queries, including searches on a person's or business's name.

Google's own developer documentation confirms a page must already be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to be cited as a supporting link — there's no separate ranking system or special optimization for appearing in an AI Overview specifically. In other words, it draws from the same pool of indexed pages as ordinary search results, not some independent AI knowledge base.

Google's own guidance to users is blunt about reliability: "AI Overviews can and will make mistakes," and recommends checking the supporting links before treating an overview as fact.

How to fix what it says about you

There's no direct "edit the AI Overview" button — the fix runs through the same sources that feed regular search results, plus two official Google reporting channels.

  1. 1

    Audit what's currently showing

Search your name or business on Google and read the AI Overview plus its supporting links to see exactly what it says and where it's likely sourced from.

  2. 2

Fix or remove the cited source pages

Since AI Overview citations require the same indexing and snippet eligibility as regular Search results, correcting an inaccurate page you control, or pursuing removal/suppression of one you don't, is the primary lever, the same underlying work as our Search Suppression service.

  3. 3

Use Google's feedback and legal-report channels

Click "Report a problem" under the AI Overview itself for informal feedback — Google gives no commitment on whether or when it acts on this. Separately, Google's "Report Content on Google" troubleshooter explicitly asks whether your issue relates to AI-generated content, with AI Overviews and a defamation category as options — a more formal legal-content path, though not a guaranteed outcome and not something we can file on your behalf as legal representation.

  4. 4

    Re-check periodically

AI Overviews regenerate continuously as Google re-crawls the web, with no fixed schedule — treat this as an ongoing check rather than a one-time fix.

Notice: AI Overviews cite specific source pages, and fixing or removing those pages is the primary lever. A free assessment of that specific page can tell you whether removal is realistic before you do anything else.

If it doesn't stick

Because AI Overviews regenerate from whatever's currently indexed, fixing today's cited source doesn't guarantee tomorrow's overview stays clean — a different page saying something similar can get pulled in as a new citation later, especially if the underlying topic (a lawsuit, a review, a news story) keeps generating new coverage.

Neither of Google's official feedback channels publishes a response-time commitment or a confirmation that a report was acted on.

Because new citations can keep appearing, our AI Reputation Repair service keeps checking the overview and correcting the sources behind it.

Common questions

Can I get Google to just delete an AI Overview about me?

No — there's no delete button for a specific AI Overview, and Google says plainly that "AI Overviews can and will make mistakes." What actually works is fixing or removing the underlying web pages it draws from, since a page has to be indexed and snippet-eligible in regular Search to be cited at all.

Does fixing the source page really change the AI Overview?

Google officially confirms AI Overview citations require the same indexing and snippet eligibility as regular Search results, with no separate AI-specific ranking system — so yes, this connection is real. It doesn't guarantee a specific page gets picked as the citation, though.

Is there a legal option if an AI Overview says something false about me?

Google's "Report Content on Google" tool explicitly asks whether your report relates to AI-generated content, including AI Overviews, and offers a defamation category. It runs on the same legal standards as any other content removal request — not a guaranteed or fast process, and we're not a legal service, so we can't file this as your attorney.

How long does it take for an AI Overview to update?

There's no published schedule. AI Overviews regenerate continuously as Google re-crawls the web, so a similar overview can regenerate from a different source in the meantime.

Is an AI Overview the same as Google's Knowledge Panel?

No — a Knowledge Panel is structured data about a recognized entity, sourced from places like a verified profile or Google's own knowledge graph. An AI Overview is a generative summary Google assembles on the fly from indexed web pages for a specific search query. They can appear on the same results page but come from different systems, and fixing one doesn't automatically fix the other.

Do I pay if the AI answer doesn't change?

AI Reputation Repair is billed for the work performed, and no change to an AI answer is guaranteed. Our removal services are different: they are no-removal, no-fee, and you're invoiced only once we achieve the removal defined in your Service Agreement.
